Be part of a team that leads and enables quality commercial decision making and delivery, financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, procurement, billings, payables and ensures prudent financial management to fund much of the infrastructure development and service delivery activities of the council.

In this 2-year graduate programme, you’ll have the opportunity to be involved in significant projects that will affect the daily lives of Aucklanders, including building new libraries and swimming pools, infrastructure for new housing developments, and caring for our environment, in an organisation that owns over $50 billion worth of assets.  You’ll have the opportunity to learn what makes businesses tick from an integrated financial, commercial, strategic, and business planning perspective.

Build the exposure and experience you need to pursue your career path, with rotations through finance functions including:

  • Group treasury and corporate finance.
  • Financial control and reporting
  • Group financial strategy and planning.
  • Finance business partnering, including commercial advisory.
  • Procurement

Each rotation will provide a healthy mix of on-the-job learning, mentoring from experienced professionals and meaningful work.

At the end of the programme, you’ll also be supported in securing a permanent role within Auckland Council entities.

In your 2-year programme, you could be spending time supporting local democracy through rotations focused on:

  • Advising in our governance model: become a trusted advisor and develop your critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills while you contribute to quality advice and service delivery on a broad range of governance matters.
  • Working with elected and appointed members: learn to navigate Auckland’s unique shared governance model and how to work effectively with our elected appointed members. Support the mayor, councillors and local board members to perform their roles effectively to make Auckland a city we can be proud of.
  • Engaging with our communities and citizens: bring the voice of Aucklanders into council through research and public engagement, and champion democracy by supporting our local election campaigns and efforts to achieve more inclusive democratic participation.

We are looking for an innovative graduate who has good interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive relationships.

You will be highly skilled in applications and possess good judgement, problem-solving and decision-making skills. You must have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and its relationship to local government.

Ngā Mātārae | Māori Outcomes Graduate

Our Ngā Mātārae division supports the council group (including council-controlled organisations) to deliver on Māori outcomes by:

  • setting strategic direction
  • enhancing organisational capability, systems, processes, and performance
  • facilitating strategic relationships and Māori participation in decision-making.

As a Ngā Mātārae Graduate, you will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction to achieve positive Māori outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include enhancing overall performance in delivering Māori-focused initiatives and cultivating meaningful relationships with mana whenua and other stakeholders.

Your work will be guided by our Kia Ora Tāmaki Makaurau framework, which highlights our commitment to positive outcomes with, for and by Māori. Additionally, you will receive full support through a mentor and a designated buddy.

As our Ngā Mātārae Graduate, you will:

  • Help develop, advise, and support the mahi of our Insights and Strategy, & Partnership and Engagement teams which reflects and responds to the voices of the mana whenua and mataawaka.
  • Gather, analyse, and assess key information and evidence.
  • Collaborate with key internal partners and Houkura / Independent Māori Statutory Board.
  • Review and apply a Māori perspective to proposed legislative changes, strategy and policy.

As the Ngā Mātārae graduate, you will have the opportunity to be involved in mahi across various directorates within council as part of a rotation programme.

You are someone who has excellent relationship management skills including being comfortable with working with the mana whenua and mataawaka and possess excellent communication skills. We are looking for someone who is comfortable with te reo and at a minimum has good pronunciation and use basic te reo Māori in emails, meetings, and conversations.

To be eligible to apply, you must have the following:

Risk and Assurance Graduate

Our Risk and Assurance team are responsible for enabling, supporting, and assisting our people in making good decisions, providing assurance to senior management and elected members to instil trust and confidence in the way Auckland Council meets it obligations to Aucklanders.

As a Graduate in our team, you will rotate through the following units:

  • Internal audit: supporting the team in the delivery of the internal audit plan; obtaining relevant information and assessing process and control effectiveness across different areas of council.
  • Risk: supporting the team in their facilitation and continuous improvement of risk management practices across Auckland Council, this ranges from strategic risks to directorate and business unit risks and will include the preparation and facilitation of risk workshops, presentations, and hosting risk champion seminars.
  • Integrity: supporting the team in their response to integrity related speak ups, obtaining and analysing information relevant to investigations, along with assisting with integrity reporting.
  • Insurance and claims: obtaining relevant information to support claims under review, predominantly assisting the team to process business as usual claims (most common being public liability claims).

Each rotation will provide a healthy mix of on-the-job learning, mentoring from experienced professionals and meaningful work.
