He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Our Building Consent team have a crucial role in ensuring safe, compliant, and well-constructed buildings by ensuring that construction adheres to codes, safety standards and regulations.

This role will help you understand compliance (or non-compliance) with the building code and the approved building consent specifications.

Your day-to-day tasks will involve assisting with:

  • Site inspections by reviewing the consent and building work across disciplines such as building, plumbing and drainage.
  • Complaint investigation and audits with our capability team.
  • Front of house enquiries regarding building consent services.
  • Providing advice in accordance to the Building act and codes.
  • Processing of building consents.

Each rotation will provide a healthy mix of on-the-job learning, mentoring from experienced professionals and meaningful work.

At the end of the programme, you’ll also be supported in securing a permanent role within Auckland Council entities.

This role is deemed safety sensitive and in line with Auckland Council policy, you will be required to complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

He kōrero mōu: About you

Our Building Consent Graduates showcase initiative, have a strong attention to detail, possess excellent customer service skills with a thirst for learning.

We welcome applications from graduates who have done either a Diploma or a Bachelor level study in the following disciplines:

  • Building Control Surveying
  • Construction Management
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Architecture, Architectural drafting or technology
  • Building Science
  • Engineering (Civil, Construction, Architectural)

To be eligible to apply, you must have the following:

  • Be eligible to work in New Zealand, or be eligible to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa
  • A relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree obtained in January 2023 – January 2025
  • Have a valid NZ-restricted driver’s license with the ability to obtain a full licence by February 2025.

Healthy Waters, Environmental Compliance Graduate

Our Healthy Waters department is responsible for the management, planning and development of stormwater systems and its effects on the environment.

We work with iwi and value te mauri o te wai, the life-supporting capacity of water, to deliver our objectives in an innovative, sustainable and collaborative way.

We aim to future-proof Auckland’s water by creating healthy environments, empowering our communities and building resilient stormwater systems which fulfil Auckland Council’s Te Taruke-a-Tawhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan.

Your role will be split across our Healthy Waters and Regulatory teams. Your day-to-day tasks may involve:

  • A variety of fieldwork

Each rotation will provide a healthy mix of on-the-job learning, mentoring from experienced professionals and meaningful work.

At the end of the programme, you’ll also be supported in securing a permanent role within Auckland Council entities.

We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in stormwater systems. You will have strong communication and interpersonal skills. You must be able to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with cross functional teams.

We welcome applications from graduates in the following disciplines:

  • Environmental Science
  • Environmental Management
  • Environmental Engineering

To be eligible to apply, you must have the following:

  • Be eligible to work in New Zealand, or be eligible to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa
