In this role, there is a strong focus on collaboration, communication, research, and advocacy, particularly around community safety and harm prevention (in a public health context).

Your day-to-day work may involve:

  • Supporting or leading research, evidence and communication of our key advocacy areas
  • Supporting the refresh and development of existing and new public and staff information tools.
  • Reviewing and improving the way in which we can monitor and account for the outcomes of our work.
  • Reviewing and reporting on new and emerging research and evidence nationally and internationally

  • Working with elected and appointed members: learn to navigate Auckland’s unique shared governance model and how to work effectively with our elected appointed members. Support the mayor, councillors and local board members to perform their roles effectively to make Auckland a city we can be proud of.
  • Engaging with our communities and citizens: bring the voice of Aucklanders into council through research and public engagement, and champion democracy by supporting our local election campaigns and efforts to achieve more inclusive democratic participation.

Our Ngā Mātārae division supports the council group (including council-controlled organisations) to deliver on Māori outcomes by:

  • setting strategic direction
  • enhancing organisational capability, systems, processes, and performance
  • facilitating strategic relationships and Māori participation in decision-making.

As a Ngā Mātārae Graduate, you will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction to achieve positive Māori outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include enhancing overall performance in delivering Māori-focused initiatives and cultivating meaningful relationships with mana whenua and other stakeholders.

Your work will be guided by our Kia Ora Tāmaki Makaurau framework, which highlights our commitment to positive outcomes with, for and by Māori. Additionally, you will receive full support through a mentor and a designated buddy.

As our Ngā Mātārae Graduate, you will:

  • Help develop, advise, and support the mahi of our Insights and Strategy, & Partnership and Engagement teams which reflects and responds to the voices of the mana whenua and mataawaka.
  • Gather, analyse, and assess key information and evidence.
  • Collaborate with key internal partners and Houkura / Independent Māori Statutory Board.
  • Review and apply a Māori perspective to proposed legislative changes, strategy and policy.

You are someone who has excellent relationship management skills including being comfortable with working with the mana whenua and mataawaka and possess excellent communication skills. We are looking for someone who is comfortable with te reo and at a minimum has good pronunciation and use basic te reo Māori in emails, meetings, and conversations.

As a Waste Solutions Graduate, you will support a range of environmental services and programme to deliver the Zero Waste aspirations of our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

Our 2-year graduate programme will provide you with accelerated learning, development and rotations.  Our rotations will ensure that you get a 360-degree view and exposure to:

  • Project Delivery
    • This team looks after a range of projects from procuring a new operator for the Material Recycling Facility to several projects.
  • Waste Enterprise & Refuse
    • This team looks after waste activities as well as refuse stations, community recycling centres and operations and maintenance of the Materials Recycling facility where all of Auckland’s recycling is processed.
  • Customer & Operations
    • Rubbish, Recycling, Food Scraps, Inorganic and Illegal Dumping collections across the region. This team does it all! C& OT manages the contracts and compliance for all the above services along with actioning all the customer queries and requests for service while maintaining an excellent customer satisfaction score. The team is at the centre of customer, and contract management of waste-related enquiries, the team also manages the supply and maintenance of bins, and provision of Council waste related ‘pay as you throw products’.
  • Community WasteWise
    • Community WasteWise Team works with the residents of Tāmaki Makaurau to drive education and behaviour change towards Waste Minimisation. The guiding document for the team is the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, also referred as WMMP
