He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Our Healthy Waters department is responsible for the management, planning and development of stormwater systems and its effects on the environment.

We work with iwi and value te mauri o te wai, the life-supporting capacity of water, to deliver our objectives in an innovative, sustainable and collaborative way.

We aim to future-proof Auckland’s water by creating healthy environments, empowering our communities and building resilient stormwater systems which fulfil Auckland Council’s Te Taruke-a-Tawhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan.

Your role will be split across our Healthy Waters and Regulatory teams. Your day-to-day tasks may involve:

  • A variety of fieldwork

Each rotation will provide a healthy mix of on-the-job learning, mentoring from experienced professionals and meaningful work.

At the end of the programme, you’ll also be supported in securing a permanent role within Auckland Council entities.

We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in stormwater systems. You will have strong communication and interpersonal skills. You must be able to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with cross functional teams.

We welcome applications from graduates in the following disciplines:

  • Environmental Science
  • Environmental Management
  • Environmental Engineering

To be eligible to apply, you must have the following:

  • Be eligible to work in New Zealand, or be eligible to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa
  • A relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree obtained in January 2023 – January 2025
  • A NZ restricted license is desired

This is your chance to make your mark on Auckland City’s future state. By helping shape Auckland’s urban landscape you’ll be ensuring that the city’s development aligns with regulations, sustainability and community needs.

As a Graduate Planner at Auckland Council, you will gain exposure to a wide variety of planning, planning-related roles and participate in key projects like understanding and researching what would help Auckland remain a liveable city in the future.

Our 2-year graduate programme will provide you with accelerated learning, development and rotations.  Our rotations will ensure that you get a 360-degree view and exposure to:

  • Resource consents – provide accurate information to stakeholders about planning documents and resource consent application process and procedures.
  • Statuary planning – Assisting with processing of statutory plans and notices of requirement.
  • Policy development and analysis
  • Environmental monitoring – Ensure compliance, assess impacts of non-compliance, collect and prepare admissible evidence.

Each rotation will provide a healthy mix of on-the-job learning, mentoring from experienced planning professionals and meaningful project work. You will get the opportunity to experience the full cycle from concept design right through to monitoring!

At the end of the programme, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a permanent opportunity that is aligned to your ideal planning specialism.

This role is deemed safety sensitive and in line with Auckland Council policy, you will be required to complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing

Our graduate planners have exceptional written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent analytical skills.

We welcome applications from graduates in the following disciplines:

  • Urban Planning
  • Environmental Planning

To be eligible to apply, you must have the following:

  • Be eligible to work in New Zealand, or be eligible to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa
  • A relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree obtained in January 2023 – January 2025
  • Have a valid NZ-restricted driver’s license with the ability to obtain a full licence by February 2025.
